Abstract
The aim of this article is to clarify the situation of Argentine cooperatives, in terms of their economic and social contribution, their potentialities and limitations. The article is structured in three different sections. In the first one a brief reference is made to the development of the movement from its origin. The second section is devoted to describe the development processes during the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. The positioning of the entities is considered according to the interest of their membership, the activity sector, and the jobs generated. The third section analyzes the role of the State and the public policies oriented to the sector. The main conclusions of the analysis are presented on these references.
