Retrato estatístico e demográfico das cooperativas em Portugal

Abstract

Cooperatives, by combining economic activity with principles of solidarity, equity and democracy, play an essential role in creating wealth and in strengthening social cohesion and sustainable development. This study by gathering the main statistics on the Portuguese cooperative sector, aims to present as complete a portrait as possible of the sector's activity in Portugal and its positioning in the national economy, as well as characterize other areas of its activity. This data thus allows, among other aspects, to highlight a resilient sector, with high participation of society, which, despite some weaknesses in terms of organizational management, demonstrates a strong economic contribution in multiple sectors, generates lasting and inclusive employment, and is an important actor in sustainable development.
